Tech Pack - Process

Think of a Tech Pack (TP) as a recipe book... but for apparel.

The objective of the TP is to provide detailed information and instructions for the factory to make the garment. The objective of this project is to demonstrate the six steps required to create a TP.

________________________
1. Overview - first page is a summary page where key details of the product are provided like visuals of the final product (including all colour options), fabrics, colours references, trims and key features.

The Overview page is not just for the sewing line in the factory. It can be given to a merchandiser, marketing department, developers, supply chain department, logistics etc. It is important that know the key details of the product to and have a quick, easy to read document to hand.

2. Construction Details - This is a vital part of the TP to call out the information for construction details, fabric placement, trims, logos and other key features.

Depending on the complexity of the garment, there could be a lot of information to cover! Therefore it is always better to spread the construction details across multiple page. For example, a separate page for the internal construction details.

Bonus tip - leave plenty of white space on the paper for the factory to add their own notes.

3. BOM (Bill of Materials) - simply put, the BOM is a list of ingredients! The BOM should outline all the components, trims, fabrics to make a single garment along with quantity and colours.

Bonus tip - place the BOM after the Construction Detail pages to make it easier to cross reference and check.

4. Trim Call-Outs - Super important to identify and provide detailed information for all the trims identified in the BOM. Key information includes: artwork, measurements, colour, application, position on the garment.

Bonus Tip - provide an image of an existing trim for reference.

5. POM (Point of Measurements) - Not the same as a Size Specification!!! These are common measurements that will run across all sizes. Example: the thickness of a sleeve cuff / length of a pocket zip / width of a placket.

6. Size Specification - THIS IS VITAL!!! Missing out a size specification will lead to size and fit problems, hence why I recommend getting an experience Product Developer to create your size specification.

Bonus Tip - Amendments Page - Very useful when communicating comments / amendments / updates on the tech pack to the garment factory. Ensure that all comments / amendments / updates are dated to avoid confusion.
